- Well, I just have to add my $0.02 worth:
-
- When I was a high school sophomore, I was given an HP41CV, which was
- stolen my sophomore year of college (~2 months before the HP$* came
- out), so I bought the nearest replacement that I could find: the
- HP28S. Yea, the HP28 was over kill - I never used all of its features,
- but I used enough to justify its cost (in my book). Just recently I
- found a good deal on an HP48 (a business major had bought w/ printer
- for physics class - these are the students who are wasting their money)
- and bought an HP48. Again, I don't use anywhere near all of the
- functions of the HP48, but I use enough of it that it is still well
- worth the cost in my book.
-
- Quite simply, it depends lots of factors. There was a girl in my class
- who had an HP48 and used as a very glorified credit card size calc! On
- the other hand most of the rest got by with $10 sharps. But when we
- took Methods in Numericl Anaylsis those of us who had HP28s (the HP48
- wasn't out yet) had an easier time of it - we still did all of the
- calculations by hand (at least I did :), we just didn't have to keep
- typing in the same numbers over and over again.
-
- Given my personality, no matter what my major was, I probably would
- have bought an HP48 eventuall (possibly after school) just for fun, but
- as an engineering major, I find it very useful. Similarly, the average
- english student probably doesn't NEED an HP48 for school or
- professional work, but then again, how many students really NEEDED all
- those $300-$700 stereos that I see in dorm rooms?

- I get paid for my opinions, but that doesn't mean that UNC or anybody
