- I am writing this in hope that HP relook the way they are doing patches.
- This stems from a recent experience I had with DART tapes. NOTE: I am
- not flaming HP, the local office support (it was great!), ... in any way
- as this is only to be taken as constructive criticism.
-
- HP uses a periodical patching mechanism known as DART tapes. Every few
- months, a worldwide distribution of a DART tape is made to support
- customers. This is good! Thus the frequency I have no problem with. On
- the DART tape is filesets which correspond to those products which have been
- patched and is also covered on your software agreement.
-
- One nice improvement would be when none of my products have been patched and
- it is time for another DART, that nothing is mailed to me. Now, if this
- situation would to occur today, I would receive the DART fileset doc which
- I promptly place in the recycling bin. Which brings me to the next point.
-
- What the heck is the use of this DART fileset doc? It serves the end-user
- no use that I can think of. Where is the install instructions? What format
- is the patches in: cpio, tar, dump, update (I know update, but what about
- a brand new support customer and DART 7 - he would never know!) I think
- HP does a great job with doc why such the lapse in patch kits.
-
- Over the summer we received DART tapes of which there were notable problems.
- Luckily, I personally did not have to need to install them. Around September
- a memo was sent out outlining all the problems and that we should wait for
- a consolidated DART coming out soon. Just about then I was looking for my
- new verion of ALLBASE for development and thus decided to wait for the infamous
- DART 7. When I went to install the ALLBASE F.0 that was supposed to be on
- it, I instead only had E.something. Where was my F.0? The doc fileset
- said it was there, HP response center said it was there, HP ALLBASE dev
- team said it was supposed to be there, well it wasn't. A local SE did
- quite a bit of looking into it and to his surprise he got conflicting
- information as well.
-
- In the end, I have finally got it installed. Seems there is even more
- issues about DDS distribution and the rev of your OS and corresponding
- update command. HP your are going the wrong route and coming close to
- the way ... Yuck ... that IBM is getting blasted for their patches (check
- comp.unix.aix any day of the week). I can only the huge coordination
- effort involved with this, but I am sure there is room for improvement.
