  15. The "frame buffer" is accessed by the /dev/crt device file.

  17. I am concerned by your question.  There are very few reasons to access
  18. /dev/crt directly.  All current displays have sophisticated graphics
  19. controllers that are much more than simple frame buffers.  The interface to
  20. these devices differs for each display type.  The portable way to use
  21. these devices is via X windows or one of the graphics libraries such as
  22. Starbase or HP-PHIGS.

  24. Some of the newest displays are only supported by X and by the graphics
  25. libraries within X windows.  If you describe what features you want to
  26. use, I could suggest the easiest approach.
