  16. What are you using to check swap usage?  Just wondering.

  18. If you have 8.07 available, you might try running the /etc/swapinfo
  19. program with the -t option (for a totals line), and note the "hold"
  20. line.  (I think you could ftp it from an 8.07 system and it would run OK
  21. on 8.05.)  The "hold" line represents swap space not allocated on any
  22. particular swap area (device or file system) nor dedicated to any
  23. specific process, but nonetheless reserved for existing processes.  It
  24. can be significant.

  26. Yes, reserving all swap that a process might ever need is a conservative
  27. approach...  This has been discussed before.  I don't know what changes
  28. if any are in the works.
