- I have a bit of a problem with HP-UX's idea of virtual memory and
- management thereof.
-
- We have a cluster of three HP's, the server is 720, the two client
- nodes are 705s. The server has 32 Mb of memory, the clients have mere
- 24 Mb. All the disks are at the server end. The clients have no local
- disks. We have 120 Mb of device swap and added to that is 50 Mb of
- filesystem swap.
-
- We run mainly FrameMaker and a CAD program called Vertex. I was first
- notifed about the problem as one of our users complained that he
- couldn't print from FrameMaker. As I looked into it, I noticed that
- his FrameMaker process had gobbled up in excess of 30 Mb of memory
- (not the problem), and all the swap space had been used (problem, as
- it seems FrameMaker wants some swap to do the printing). I told him to
- save the documents he was working on and try it again. Now he could
- print what he wanted and some of the swap was freed.
-
- This got me interested, as I thought that we had plenty of swap at our
- disposal (about 80 Mb of physical memory and 170 Mb of swap). This
- morning as I checked the amount of memory and swap used I noted that
- there was still over half of the swap space allocated even though
- there were only two Vuegreets and a couple of xterms running from this
- cluster.
-
- We are running HP-UX 8.05, and HP said there is one patch that might
- help (the number was 0611, I think, my notes are at work). What I'd
- like to know is that have anyone else bumped into this kind of a
- situation and how on Earth did you manage to get around it.
-
- One possibility is to buy more memory or increase swap space, but I'd
- rather prefer getting rid of this problem once and for all.
-
- Thanks in advance,
-
