  10. I have been running th R.P.N. BBS in Seattle since this summer and am
  11. getting a bit discouraged. Because of the items listed below, I am
  12. considering shutting down the BBS; any e-mail on your feelings about this
  13. to rpnbbs@u.washington.edu (preferred) or here (akcs.wiley) will be
  14. greatly appreciated and will determine wether I actually go through with
  15. the shutdown. Here's the list:

  17. 1) Lack of general interest--my BBS only gets about 10-20 calls a week
  18. and that's just not enough to justify 1) the loss of processor power
  19. running it in the background and 2) the degradation of the computer
  20. system from leaving it on 24 hours.

  22. 2) Lack of repeat customers--it is rare for anyone who calls my BBS to
  23. call back more than three times. Most just call once or twice and are
  24. never heard from again. I don't think it's the BBS itself as many people
  25. have told me how much they like it; I think it may be mostly due to #3.

  27. 3) Increase in other HP BBSes--as the list of BBSes I compiled shows,
  28. there is much more competition for me. Most other BBSes offer faster
  29. modem speeds (I'll be getting a 14.4k modem in a week or two), better
  30. discussion forums, and are more established (i.e. have more hp48
  31. "insiders" actively using them.

  33. 4)The problem of BBS rape--about 90% of my callers call, download an
  34. average of 20-30 files, and just hang up. Since hp48 files are hard to
  35. come by, I don't require any uploads; instead, I expect people to help
  36. others by actively participating in the discussion forums. So far, out of
  37. about 150 calls, only THREE people have bothered to do this. This is what
  38. makes me really mad---I spend $400 on the BBS (extra phone line, BBS
  39. software, modem), and people think it's unreasonable to spend an extra
  40. $2.00 on their long distance bill to give back something for the files
  41. they have taken.

  43. Please, if there is anyone who likes the R.P.N. BBS and would like to see
  44.  stay, write back telling me so. Just one or two thank-you's may cause me
  45. to change my mind. If no one writes back, I'll assume no one cares and
  46. I'll shut down the board promptly and stop wasting my time. Overall, I'd
  47. say running the BBS has been a positive experience; I just want to know
  48. if it will be worth it to continue.
