- I read that report and thought it was totally biased towards
- general purpose cpu. Look at the performace comparsion (2.2),
- it compared them with the cycle period at first. Well, 21064
- is well known as the fastest chip in the world, and TI320c40
- costs as low as $500(? rumor.) And the comparsion followed
- all assume the data and code is in cache (I guess? can someone
- prove this?) Sure code can be in instruction cache, but data
- are changing with time, how can them exist in memory?
-
- Cannot deny that general purpose cpu has a better development
- environment. But who said the DSP chips has no good development
- environment?
-
- And the "Is Real Time Necessary" part made me feel strange.
- Hum, real-time not necessary in DSP? It said the general purpose
- cpu has cache, so after a initial time, it will run faster. But
- the question is, the 8K cache on 21064 is enough?
-
- I can imagine if a modem with 21064's heat-sinker. (grin).
-
- 21064 is a good general purpose cpu, but today's DSP is somewhat
- toward parallel processing (in my own opinion). TI320c40 is fast,
- but it is not only fast, but flexible communication and reasonable
- cost. This makes me to think of Alpha-PC, another joke, I think.
-
- Porco.
-
- ps. this is only my own opinion, not representing anything else.
