- Well I cannot dissuade you from buying a '486 but I can tell you why
- I'm never buying a mac...
-
- #1 The software costs WAY too much. Microsoft Word's price is a joke. It's
- like you're SUPPOSED to buy it and split the cost between a few friends...
- I'd like to run X on whatever computer I buy next. MacX server software
- is $300. Get a clue... I believe it is FREE on the PC...
-
- #2 Macs cost too much. Apple charges what people will pay for them. The
- uninformed don't realize they're getting ripped relative to the cost of
- the components. I'm not totally uninformed... Of course, as magical
- wonder tools, computers in general are as amazing a bargain as long-distance
- phone calls...
-
- #3 If I'm going to pay a lot for the computer, I want some co-processors.
- Sheesh, you can get a used SGI Indigo for ^$6000...
-
- #4 I hate the mac file system. I don't LIKE dos, but at least you can access
- any file without fussing around with resource parameters... Ditto for
- any form of unix... Are there really any alternative operating systems
- for the mac other than I believe $1000 Apple Unix (AUX)?
-
- Like you, I want to buy a Falcon or an Amiga, But I'm waiting. I am afraid
- brute force on the PCs will ultimately overtake the design elegance of these
- machines. I'll still keep my 1040 though... I just need to get X running
- on it and I'll be happy for some time yet. The NCDs in my lab only have
- 8 Mhz 68000s and they are perfectly adequate X terminals...
