  12. I've just finished a quick and dirty port of the latest GNU ZIP (v0.6).
  13. You will find it at atari.archive in the near future, and at ftp.uni-kl.de
  14. when you read this (/pub/atari/archivers/gzip06st.zoo). It looks like
  15. FSF will use GNU ZIP instead of COMPRESS in the future in the GNU-project.
  16. That means a LOT of people will start using it fairly soon, so why not be
  17. one of them? :-) Anyway, GNU ZIP does compress a lot better and it will
  18. eventually support the immensly popular PKZIP-format (from the PC-world).
  19. It already suports multiple-file archives (something COMPRESS never did).
  20. For more information on what is planned for future GNU ZIP-releases please
  21. take a look at the TODO-file in the original source-distribution (see below).

  23. In the archive you will find two different executables. One that should
  24. run fine under for example MinixFS (called gzip_xfs.ttp) and one that
  25. I compiled so that it shouldn't use symbolic links, multiple dot-filenames
  26. or try to change the owner of the file (called gzip_tos.ttp since I
  27. believe there's a small chance it will work on a normal TOSFS). Neither
  28. of the two programs has been tested _without_ MiNT installed, so if you
  29. try to run them from plain old TOS you might run into big problems. The
  30. two executables has been built by GCC v2.3.1 PL1 with MiNTlibs PL25 (if
  31. anyone is interested :-).

  33. You will also find the original README file, the COPYING file, a small
  34. document describing GNU ZIP and the makefile I used when building GNU
  35. ZIP on the Atari. The original source-distribution can be found at your
  36. local gnu-ftp-site or at prep.ai.mit.edu as /pub/gnu/gzip-0.6.tar.Z. In
  37. the source-distribution you will also find a couple of shell-scripts that
  38. could come in handy when dealing with packed files. There's also some more
  39. documentation concerning the algorithm and a man-page.
