- Jonathan,
-
- Well, it's not as simple as playing connect the dots between the SIO port
- connector's pins and the pins on a DB25 connector on the back of your
- modem. You need some sort of interface or cable that converts the
- signals your Atari uses, into the signals the Modem uses, which
- adhere to a standard called RS232.
-
- There are several devices that can do this, none that I've seen are do
- it-your self kits... yet. They are all commercial products. Here
- is a low down on most of the ones I am aware of, and what
- exactly they provide:
-
- P:R: Connection, a little box that plugs into your SIO port, and
- gives you two RS232 (modem) ports, and a printer port.
- This device was put out by ICD, Inc, but they no longer have them
- in stock. best to check with one of the Mail Order houses.
-
- 850 Interface, this one from Atari, it gave one printer and 4 RS232
- ports. Same as above, check with mail order houses supporting the 8 bit.
-
- Supra R-Verter--- a cable that plugs into the SIO port, and was a cable
- with a modem port on the other end. Same as above, look for a used
- one somewhere. this will be the least expensive of them all.
-
- MIO - a box FROM ICD Inc, that plugs into the Parallel Bus connector
- on the back of your 800XL, giving you Printer and Modem ports, and
- a SCSI/SASI hard drive connector. in addition, the box has RAM memory
- inside, which can be used as a print spooler and/or a RAMDISK.
- The box cost from $150-$300 depending on the RAM configuration.
- I think ICD might have one left... maybe not.
-
- Black BOX - from Computer Software Services...Plugs into the Parallel
- Bus port like the MIO, and has Modem, Printer, and SCSI Hard disk
- ports. Also has some extra goodies, like a 6502 debugger, Screen dump
- utility, and an add on card that allows connection of IBM type
- floppy drives, either 5.25" or 3.5", from 360K on up to 1.44 meg.
- The plane jane Black Box runs $199.95 I think, with enhanced
- printer dump routine, disk sector editor being one add-on extra, and
- the Floppy Controller being another extra. This one is still being
- sold, and continually supported, with frequent improvements to the
- product.
-
- Hope this helps.
