- Hello,
-
- I have not been following the Apple II scene for about 4 years now,
- so please bear with my stupidity and/or naivity in that domain.
-
- In 10 months I'll have to spend a full 10 months in the South of
- France, where I have an Apple II GS. What I'd like is to use the
- IIgs for keeping in touch with international email networks
- and usenet news. I am computer litterate enough to do that
- using my PC here in UK, but for personal reasons I am not
- willing to take the PC down to France.
-
- The problem is that my IIgs is still in the same state as 4 years ago.
- In fact, it's in the same state as 6 years ago. I used to be pretty
- litterate with my good ol' ][+ and the IIgs inherited most of the
- peripherals from the ][+.
-
- So here is the hardware description: (nostalgic corner)
-
- - Apple IIgs, 512k RAM (that includes a near-empty memory card)
- - 2 x Disk ][ 5.25 in floppy drives
- - mouse
- - CP/M card (only works at the slower speed)
- - B/W monitor
- - Colour monitor
- - Silentype Printer (yes, the thermal paper one !!!)
- - 256k additional RAM card (only works for a few applications)
- - ROM revision 1
-
- Note the lack of 3.5 inch drive.
-
- So now the question is:
-
- -> what additional hardware do I require to be able to use the IIgs
- as either:
-
- - full connection to Internet host server running PPP or SLIP
- - uucp connection
- - any other way possible
-
- The connection in each case would be dialup, downloading & uploading
- information in a restricted amount of time.
-
- Most important: How much would it cost me to acquire all this hardware.
- ie: price of RAM, 3.5 floppy, cheapo' modem, etc. 2nd hand (or even 3rd ;)).
-
- Answers via email directly to me are preferred, but not essential.
-
- Cheers,
-
- O. (who is >forced< to use PCs when an Apple is really in his heart :-) )
