- Yesterday I received the latest issue of Computer Graphics World. This
- issue contains an article called "Prime Time Proving Ground for 3D
- Graphics" which includes a relatively lengthy and favorable discussion
- of the use of the Amiga in the production of "Babylon 5" and an upcoming
- Steven Spielberg series called "Sea Quest".
-
- Some quotes that the net might enjoy (taken without permission)........
-
- Thorton*, who began creating effects in 1978 with miniatures and motion
- control equipment, bought a Video Toaster in 1990. "I tried creating
- something that looked like the cover of a science fiction book but
- was also scientifically accurate," he says. "When I finished the test, I
- sold my motion control equipment."
-
- (* Ron Thorton is the special effects creator for Babylon 5 - jlm)
-
- ..... asked if he could make B5 work with computer graphics. He did -
- using Video Toasters and eight Amiga 2000's with '040 accelerators
- and 32 meg of RAM for rendering. He notes proudly that if he added up the
- cost of the entire rendering network, including overhead and "even the
- furniture," it would still cost less than one good workstation with
- high-end animation software.
-
- ......"In one shot," says animator Mark Swain who worked on the project,
- "the camera starts in the control room and pulls back all the way into
- hyperspace, where we see the planets, and reveals the huge space
- station. In one shot!" he exclaims. "and we did it on a home computer,
- for God's sake."
-
- The article is enjoyable, and for once won't generate a slew of "why
- don't you ever talk about the Amiga?!?!" letters.
