  14. I missed the beginning of this discussion, and I'll admit to being a bit
  15. predjudiced, but I think that if you want RISK power in an Amiga, the best
  16. solution would be an M-bus adapter board.  That would give you access to
  17. the full range of SPARC chips, with easy upgrades as new ones become availiable.
  18. (No further hardware development required.  Software development required only
  19. to take advantage of new capabilities of new generation chips as the SPARC spec
  20. evolves.)  SMCC may currently be behind on the power curve, but do you really
  21. think they'll stay there?  And they are currently leading the price/performance
  22. curve with the microSPARC (aka Tsunami), which rolls most of an SS2 into a
  23. single chip.  According to SunWorld the quantity price for the microSPARC is
  24. half the price of an equivalent 486...

  26. If I remember the announcement right, the SPARCclassic is a microSPARC based
  27. machine with 8M RAM, 400M hard disk, SCSI-2, ethernet, 8bit audio, 2 sync/async
  28. serial ports, a parallel port, three-button mouse, ~118 key keyboard (exactly
  29. how many keys depends on which contry kit you get), a dumb framebuffer that
  30. can drive either the sun standard 1152x800 or SVGA 1024x7?? monitor; and it's
  31. bundled with Solaris-2 (SVr4 based unix + X11/NeWS, etc.).  With the SVGA
  32. monitor we're retailing it for under $4000 in quantities of 12 or more.  I'll
  33. let you guess how much of that is profit; and how much of the rest is Solaris
  34. licencing, packaging, monitor, ethernet support, etc.

  36. And the SPARC would make it easy to port Solaris-2 for upwards compatability
  37. with the existing Amiga SVr4 unix...
