- Hmm..strange. The latest CGW I just received on Saturday was the
- January 1993 issue. The main article (and title) is "3D Animation
- Explodes Across the TV Screen".
-
- On the cover is a full-color image of the Babylon 5 spaceship rendered
- from Lightwave 3D on the Amiga. The features section has another
- Babylon 5 image and the title there states "Prime-Time Proving Ground
- for 3D Graphics". The article starts on page 35.
-
- Turning to page 35 reveils yet another Babylon 5 Image taking up a
- little more than half the page. However, the Amiga is not mentioned in
- the article until the 5th page of the article. AFTER all this talk
- about ILM, Macintoshs running Electric Image and Swivel 3D (with shots
- from Space Rangers), PC's using 3D Studio and Silicon Graphics
- Workstations running Wavefront software.
-
- It seemed very odd that they used many shots of Babylon 5 to spark
- people's interest in the articles and then go on to expound upon Macs,
- PC's and SGI machines.
-
- However, near the end of page 5 starts the Amiga section. The Amiga
- talk begins after a comment from John Grower (director of computer
- graphics) with Kleiser-Walczak stating that "I don't think you could do
- any of this on the Amiga". "The size of the texture maps, the compute
- time, wold make life too difficult". This was in reference to a project
- they are doing on Silicon Graphics workstations running Wavefront
- software.
-
- Great intro for the Amiga portion of the article. At least he didn't
- "think" it could be done. He didn't outrightly say it couldn't. Did he
- consider trying it on a Mac or a PC? Probably not.
-
- After that they talk about Babylon 5 (Ron Thornton) and then on to Joe
- Conti and Unsolved Mysteries and Sea Quest which were all done on
- Amigas with the Toaster and Lightwave 3D.
-
- The last 1.5 pages of the 6 page article are devoted to the Amiga and
- the Lightwave 3D on the Toaster. The article ends on an up note for the
- Amiga and the Toaster.
-
- You may want to look for this at your local book store if you don't
- already currently subscribe to CGW.
