GIF - pronounced 'JIF' - is a picture format created by compuserve that was designed as a multi platform picture format that could be used by various PC users (whether your using a mac/clone/amiga/etc...). GIF is a compressed format so as to make the pictures as small as possible, and there are GIF
viewers for all sorts of machines (including the amiga).
It is most popular in the PC world, but was originally created as a way to transfer image data between various platforms quickly and simply.
GIF is limited to 256 colors, but I do not know of any resolution restrictions.
