- This is a revised version (of sorts) of the query I posted yesterday.
- BTW -- Thanks to all the replies I've had already. I don't want to sound
- ungrateful (I'm not at all :-), but I don't think anyone's quite grasped the
- point yet.
-
- Here's part of yesterday's post:
-
- -------------------------------
- I purchased my briliant HP DeskJet 500 about 6 months ago, and, as
- yet, have been unable to make it work to its fullest capacity. My
- setup is: Amiga 2000HD using Excellence! V3.0, printer on parallel port.
-
- This is my problem:
- 1. The DJ500 has an excellent internal font called CGTimes (6,12 pt.)
- 2. It can print this font at something like 240 cps.
- 3. It appears to me that because my software does not know the
- dimensions for the font, there's no way in hell I'm going to get my
- documents to print out (formatted properly) in CGTimes.
- 4. This is very disappointing for me. I'd have been prepared to give
- up and blame the printer, until last weekend when I hooked it up to a
- Toshiba clone laptop that I brought home -- and Word 5.5 will output in
- flawless CGTimes. :-(
- -------------------------------
-
- Replies of the form "I use Final Copy II..." are much appreciated, but miss
- the point!
-
- Someone suggested that I might be sort of mismatching my WP (which,
- admittedly, is rather graphic-output oriented) and my more text oriented
- output needs. I don't think so, for two reasons:
-
- 1. Excellence works flawlessly as a text-based WP as long as you use a font
- that it "knows". At the moment, this is pretty much limited to Courier :-)
- In fact, I NEVER use the graphics output. Apart from anything else, the
- fonts are at nowhere near the 300dpi res of the printer, and the whole
- output is just a joke.
-
- 2. I know for a fact (well, it says so in the manual :-) that the DJ500
- will work in the manner I desire with Word for Windows, and I understand this
- is a graphics-oriented WP probably comparable to Excellence. It can do this
- because Hewlett Packard provides (on a 5.25" floppy) the appropriate metric
- files for the DJ'd internal fonts. Presumably WfW reads these metrics and
- can construct a suitable screen font so that the whole thing becomes WYSIWYG.
-
-
- Point 2. just there kind of leads me on to my conclusion. Considering that
- I can get Excellence to both turn on and print in CGTimes12, I doubt that
- I need a better printer driver (though I could easily be wrong here.) It
- seems to me that I need a screen font (ie. normal crappy Amiga bitmap font)
- which matches the printer's CGTimes12. Now, if Hewlett Packard supply one
- for WfW, it couldn't be impossible to use that metric to somehow hack an
- appropriate Amiga font. I wouldn't have a hope in hell of doing it, but
- surely it could be done. Anyone from Hewlett Packard reading this and want
- to jump in? I wouldn't be sounding so fanatical about the whole thing if
- I hadn't seen the way the clone could output at 240cps. It really did look
- great. I just WISH my amy could do it!!
-
- Thanks for reading...
- Paul.
