  24. This report is concerned with integrating connectionist networks into
  25. a hidden Markov model (HMM) speech recognition system, This is
  26. achieved through a statistical understanding of connectionist networks
  27. as probability estimators, first elucidated by Herve Bourlard.  We
  28. review the basis of HMM speech recognition, and point out the possible
  29. benefits of incorporating connectionist networks.  We discuss some
  30. issues necessary to the construction of a connectionist HMM
  31. recognition system, and describe the performance of such a system,
  32. including evaluations on the DARPA database, in collaboration with
  33. Mike Cohen and Horacio Franco of SRI International.  In conclusion, we
  34. show that a connectionist component improves a state of the art HMM
  35. system.
