- Officially, it is not an abbreviation for anything. Motorola had a proprietary
- bus structure called VERSAbus. VERSAbus boards were called VERSA Modules and
- were generally labled VMxx (VM03, VM04, etc.). The story I heard in the early
- 1980's is that the folks in Europe wanted a smaller form factor. It is true
- that Motorola joined up with numerous other folks in the industry to initiate
- development of what eventually became VME. Did someone get cute and suffix "VM"
- with "E" for European? I don't know. I do know that VME and VERSAbus have a
- lot in common.
