The "official" answer, and the reason it doesn't appear in any bus specs,
is that VME doesn't stand for anything. This is because Motorola,
Signetics and Mostek were trying together to make VME a standard and they
didn't want any vendor-specific acronyms to get in anyone's way. The true
history, however: VersaModuleEurocard. VERSAbus was the early Motorola
bus designed to support the 68K. The Europeans liked the way it worked
but not the way it looked, so they moved the electrical spec onto the 6U
Eurocard form factor. Et voila!
