- Hi,
-
-
- Which entity is currently is responsible for registration of Ethernet
- protocols?
- (i.e. who issues the protocol number used in the ethernet header).
-
- I understand that if a protocol is registered as a bona fide Ethernet
- protocol
- this implies it will not conflict with any other protocols on in use on a
- LAN.
-
- If this is true why do some sites restrict the range of protocols users
- may
- use on their LAN?
-
- I guess one reason might be to limit the amount of bandwidth used
- and thus reduce network congestion. (i.e. some protocols make more use of
- broadcasts
- than others)
-
- I wonder how many sites still limit the choice of protocols?
-
- If there is sufficient interest I'll summarize.
