  20. Technical report 1/93 of the University of Karlsruhe, Department
  21. of Informatics is available. It is called
  22.  
  23.    "Measurements of MasPar MP-1216A Communication Operations"
  24.    
  25. It shows a variety of timings that have been measured
  26. for the MasPar router, xnet, and complex library interprocessor 
  27. communication operations. The results are discussed; some are really
  28. surprising. 
  29. There are some lessons to learn from these results.
  30. The most shocking one is
  31.   "Sometimes it is better to use router even if xnet would be possible"
  32.  
  33. Measured operations are:
  34.   router send/fetch, ss/ps/sp/pp_rsend and ss/ps/sp/pp_rfetch, 
  35.   (dito for xnet), 
  36.   reduce, scan, sendwith, psort, rank, select, enumerate.
  37. Measurement conditions are:
  38.   Various processor activity patterns (random, regular, block), 
  39.   various communication patterns (random, regular, block, shift),
  40.   various packet sizes (1, 2, 4, 8, 32, 128, 256 bytes),
  41.   various segment counts (for 'scan'), etc.

  43. The report has 38 pages and contains 30 diagrams. 
  44. It describes 70 different measurement series with about 
  45. 100 data points each.
  46. I think this data is a valuable aid for all MasPar programmers.
