- | Anyway, the reason for my posting is this. Are you all aware that the
- | PRICE of CONDIST (or more correctly referred to as CDDS - which combines
- | both the media and doc) has doubled beginning with your next software
- | maintenance renewal. Ouch! It used to be an excellent deal for even those
- | using a few products...now you get to weigh out the price difference.

- I've gotten up on this soapbox before, but this is one of the things that
- makes me wonder if anyone at Digital understands the computer business. From
- my point of view, the organization is big black box, but there must be a few
- key individuals inside who need to have their thoughts focused.
-
- I was hoping Palmer would locate these people, take them down into
- a soundproof sub-basement, and take the following steps to explain:
-
- Step 1. Say, "We are in the computer business. We are not in the
- documentation business."
-
- Step 2. Instruct your assistants to grab them by their necks and bang their
- heads together for two minutes to make sure this sinks in.
-
- Step 3. Say, "We produce documentation because it helps us sell
- hardware and software."
-
- Step 4. (Repeat Step 2)
-
- Step 5. Say, "You must ensure that we don't lose money on documentation, but
- you must also price and package it to help us sell hardware and
- software."
-
- Step 6. (Repeat Step 2)
-
- Step 7. Say, "We don't want to run documentation as a loss center, but neither
- do we want to run it as a profit center to the extent that it hurts
- our main business."
-
- Step 8. (Repeat Step 2)
-
- Step 9. Say, "Your performance will be evaluated on how well the
- documentation you produce helps us sell hardware and software."
-
- Step 10. (Repeat Step 2)
-
- Step 11. Say, "If you have now reformed your attitudes and refocused your
- thoughts, you may return to your offices."

- P.S. I trust that the above eleven steps constitute useful technical
- information that can also be applied to other situations encountered by system
- managers.
