- Here's a quick summary of what I would say are some of the more interesting
- minor "goodies" coming in OpenVMS VAX V6.0; not in any particular order (well,
- yes, the order they're listed in the V6.0 New Features Manual draft I have).
-
- Disclaimer: Though I have every reason to believe that this list is accurate,
- it is subject to change and should not be considered a commitment by Digital.
-
- SHOW LICENSE shows more information in a more readable format, and has a
- /WARNING_INTERVAL qualifier to let you ask what licenses are due to terminate
- in a given interval.
-
- RENAME/INHERIT_SECURITY; causes the renamed file to inherit security attributes
- as if it had been COPY-ed to the new location, instead of keeping existing
- attributes. Also a new flag to LIB$RENAME_FILE.
-
- SPAWN/TRUSTED - Indicates that the SPAWN command input originates in a trusted
- command procedure for a captive account. Also /PRIVILEGES=CURRENT|AUTHORIZED.
-
- TYPE/TAIL and /CONTINUOUS
-
- EVE editor has Motif interface. EDIT/TPU is now the default for the EDIT
- command; EDIT/EDT still available. EVE and TPU have a bunch of enhancements
- (GET WILDCARDED FILES, for instance).
-
- Ability to mount ISO 9660 media (level 3 medium interchange)
-
- Automated pool management eliminates separate SRP, IRP, LRP lists and "virtually
- eliminates the need to actively manage the allocation of pool resources."
-
- Crash Log Utility Extractor (CLUE) runs at system startup to extract and keep
- history of significant information about most recent crash (assuming there
- are any; my V6 system hasn't crashed due to a VMS problem in over a year.)
-
- InfoServer tape access
-
- Multiple queue managers.
-
- Snapshot facility to reduce system startup time by booting from a "saved
- system image file". (non-cluster systems only, and there are some restrictions,
- but imagine having the system reboot and your applications running in seconds!)
-
- SYSMAN SHUTDOWN can do cluster shutdowns with one invocation.
-
- VAXcluster Cache improves file read performance (disk data block caching)
-
- Virtual balance slots (can have many more processes without swapping)
-
- New Motif-interface debugger (superset of what's in DECset V11.)
