  12. [This message isn't about VAXes, but given INFO-VAX's wide readership, and
  13. the large number of INFO-VAX readers who include their phone numbers in their
  14. signature lines, I thought it was worth forwarding.  It's obviously appeared
  15. in multiple places already; this version comes from the TELECOM Digest.

  36.  At about 6PM Thursday evening, I got a phone call. The operator said
  37. that he had a collect call to me from Charles Pooley in New York. The
  38. name was familiar, but I didn't remember exactly why. I said I would
  39. accept the call, but then the "operator" said the call couldn't get
  40. through because I had the call collect option blocked. He then said he
  41. could pass the call through if I gave him my calling card number. I
  42. said that I'd rather call Mr. Pooley myself, and could the "operator"
  43. give me Mr. Pooley's number.  There was a pause, then a phone number
  44. with a San Jose area code! It didn't occur to me until later that , if
  45. the call was from New York, why was the call-from number (408) !??!

  47.  I remembered that Charles and I had been corresponding on a topic
  48. from sci.electronics. I was lucky enough to have an old message from
  49. him lying around, and emailed him a message about my mysterious phone
  50. call.

  52.  Charles Pooley replyed to me today -- turns out the guy tried the
  53. same scam on him too! But this time, the bogus operator said the
  54. collect call was from me to Charles! Charles was also wary, and didn't
  55. give the crook his calling card number.

  57.  So - WATCH OUT! How this con artist chose my name and Charles' to try
  58. is beyond me. As far as public postings in sci.electronics, I don't
  59. think Charles and I had exchanged more than four public postings. Most
  60. of our correspondence has been via "private" email.

  62.  This has definitely raised my paranoia level. If, out of the millions
  63. of public postings during 1992, someone should choose two
  64. correspondents who have exchange only a slight amount of messages ....
  65. I mean, why us?  Or, is there a "boilerroom" operation going on, with
  66. a bunch of phony operators, armed with USENET listings -- calling
  67. people with this con?

  69.  OH! - I may have put my phone number in one of my public
  70. sci.electronics postings - that's probably how the scamsters make
  71. their selection. Makes sense ...
