-
- I posted a request like that (and several others may have, too). I think
- I am the only one who asked about solving the problem of what to do if
- the existing LAT print queue is already using a customized symbiont
- (other than LATSYM, of course). For example, in my case I have 20 Talaris
- QUIC printers which are initialized with INIT/QUEUE/PROCESSOR=TFMSMB
- (this symbiont handles soft font download management). Currently these
- printers are hooked up to LAT servers, but we are in the process of
- overhauling our network topology, and LAT will no longer be routed.
- So we need to figure out a TCP/IP solution for these printers. We have
- purchased a whole bunch of Datability (VISTA) dual-protocol servers,
- and we are running TGV Multinet. I understand that the Multinet stream
- symbiont solution solves the simple situation where /PROCESSOR=LATSYM
- had been used, but it does not solve my Talaris problem.
-
- The only solution we have come up with so far (short of writing our own
- symbionts, which no one here, including me, is equipped to do), is to
- purchase protocol translator cards for the terminal servers. These cards
- will translate LAT to TCP/IP and vice-versa. So we would convert LAT to
- TCP/IP for the purpose of getting through the routers, then on the
- destination side convert TCP/IP back to LAT to go to the LAT server to
- which the printer is connected. This worked for the most part, but was
- incredibly messy and prone to mis-configuration.
-
- I'd appreciate any feedback, ("technical dissertations" included).
