- Having gotten the CD for Xmas, I waited until now to get around to
- playing with it. My first shot was on a machine that has a non-SCSI
- (read, proprietary, non-supported...) CD player. So, I booted up DOS
- and tried the "install 525" command, and got nowhere with it. After it
- asks you to press Y to continue, I press Y, and get err msg "Cannot
- format target disk", along with msg "0 percent complete". This is
- absolutely repeatable; it also happens with a 3.5 drive.
-
- After playing with that for awhile, I decided to try the
- LOADDSKF program. This worked. I cd'd to the BETADISK\CDINST\525
- directory, and did LOADDSKF on both DISK0.dsk and DISK1.DSK. Then I
- tried to install with those, and found out that my CD player was
- unsuppoorted (no surprise there, but I had to try it)
-
- Then, I read the DOSINFO.TXT, and it alluded to the possibility
- of creating the installation disks, using the LOADDSKF program, and so I
- tried that. I cd'd to BETADISK\OS2SE21\525 and did:
-
- for %x in (*.*) do \install\loaddskf %x a:
- (what fun!)
-
- I then installed the system, and it seems to be OK. A few comments:
- 1) The sheet that comes with with the CD tells how you can
- create "product diskettes" from an OS/2 window, but not how
- to do it from DOS. Nowhere is LOADDSKF mentioned - so I hope
- I did the right thing.
- 2) A general complaint I have about OS/2 installation is that
- patience *is* a virtue. Many places in the install, it could
- use a simple "Please wait - I.e., trust me, I know what I'm
- doing..." (Any Sledge Hammer! fans out there?) In
- particular, after the last install disk, when it is setting
- up to migrate your apps, it locks up cold solid (numlock and
- capslock are disabled) for several minutes. The first time
- thru, I assumed it had crashed, and redid the entire install.
- The second time, the same thing happened, and I was about to
- do likewise, but then I got involved reading an article on
- the net, and after several minutes, it miraculously
- continued.
- 3) Due to a bit of trouble with FDISK, I ended up installing it
- on the D: drive. Then, when I launched WIN/OS2, it complains
- that it cannot open C:\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\STARTUP.GRP
- (I am going to do the install one more time...)
-
- For all that, it looks great! Love the seamless WINOS2, on the OS2 desktop!
