- The good news: You can obtain a Native Driver from Columbia Data Products. It
- appears to work fine, at least for my setup: 2.1 Beta, 1 SCSI Disk. Disk
- access is noticeably snappier.
-
- The bad news: You have to shell out 65$ to get the driver disk+the bios update.
- At some point I'm going to try hooking up a CD-ROM and see how that works.
-
- Always claims to be negotiating to get the OS/2 drivers from Columbia and
- selling them themselves. I'll believe it when I see it.
-
- Also, I noticed one thing strange -- disk access no longer seems to trip
- up serial communications but other things do -- notable, scrolling a OS/2
- terminal session freezes my COM program, and then the COM program get's
- a bunch of line errors.
-
- For all who are into Excruciating Detail, here is the one page of documentation
- that came with the driver. I'm going to notate it with my comments; they will
- appear on lines beginning with !!
-
- Introduction
-
- This document pertains to the Columbia Data Products SST IV Always
- IN-2000 Adapter Device Driver (ADD) for IBM OS/2 2.0. This Adapter
- Device Driver will provide increased functionality and performance
- when using the Allways IN-2000 with OS/2 2.0.
- !! And apparently 2.1 also.
-
- The SST IV Always ADD for IBM OS/2 2.0 is a driver that allows the IBM
- OS/2 2.0 SCSI manager to communicate with the Always IN-2000 SCSI host
- adapter. As a result, any program or device driver that uses the OS/2
- SCSI manager should work with the Always IN-2000. The original IBM
- OS/2.0 release included device drivers that support 32-bit SCSI hard
- disk access and Toshiba/IBM CD-ROM drives in the data and audio play
- modes. Additional drivers are becoming available that support more
- CD-ROM drives in addition to removable media SCSI devices such as
- SyQuest, Bernoulli, and magneto-optical drives.
-
- Configurating the IN-2000
-
- The SST IV Always IN-2000 ADD for IBM OS/2 2.0 requires that the
- IN-2000 board have an EPROM VCN 1-03 chip or hier and Serial PROM 2.7
- or higher.
-
- The IN-2000 may be set to I/O base port 110h, 200h, or 220h, and to
- any interrupt from 10 to 15. The default settings are I/O base port
- 220h and interrupt 15. Please consult the manual included with your
- IN-2000 for information on changing these settings.
-
- When using the Always ADD, the IN-2000 ROM must be enabled, even if
- you are booting from an IDE ESDI, ST-506 or other non-IN-2000
- controlled hard disk.
-
- Configuring the SCSI Devices
-
- If you want to boot from OS/2 on a SCSI device, the hard drive must be
- set to target ID 0. The Always IN-2000 must be set to target ID 7.
- Other SCSI devices may be set to any target ID from 1 to 6. Please
- consult the manual for your SCSI device to obtain information on
- changing the SCSI target ID.
-
- Installing OS/2 2.0
-
- If you have not already installed OS/2 2.0, go ahead and do so. OS/2
- 2.0 will install properly by using the default INT 13h ADD.
-
- After installing OS/2 2.0, install the "enhanced" SST IV Always ADD by
- either:
-
- 1. Select the "OS/2 System" folder from the workplace shell; then
- select the "System Setup" icon; then select "device driver install."
-
- 2. Type ddinstal A: or ddinstal B: from the OS/2 command prompt.
-
- !! Note -- they didn't ask me if I wanted 5.25" or 3.5" diskette, and
- !! ended up receiving a 5.25". If you have to have 3.5", you better
- !! make sure Sheila gets that.
- !! They also don't mention that you don't need the IBM INT13 driver
- !! anymore, unless you have more than one real-mode-only adapter. I'm
- !! not sure if it hurts anything to leave the INT13 driver loaded, but
- !! commented out the BASEDEV line just to be sure.
-
- Advantages of the OS/2 2.0 ADD
-
- The SST IV Always ADD for OS/2 2.0 offers several advantages over the
- "standard" OS/2 2.0 Int 13h ADD. These advantages include:
-
- * The SST IV ADD supports up to seven SCSI disks.
-
- * The SST IV ADD greatly increases SCSI disk performance in OS/2 2.0.
-
- * The SST IV ADD incorporates the scatter/gather feature and
- multitasking in OS/2; the INT 13h ADD does not.
-
- * The SST IV ADD supports, vioa the IBM drivers provided with OS/2
- 2.0:
-
- * SCSI CD-ROM drives via OS2CDROM.DMD
- * SCSI Tape drives via OS2SCSI.DMD
- * ASPI for OS/2 2.0 via OS2ASPI.DMD
- * any other device driver or application that uses the IBM SCSI or
- ASPI manager.
