- First, the problem:
-
- I've killed OS/2 somehow. It now boots up and gives only a black screen.
-
- I'm new to OS/2 as of 4 days ago, so bear with me. My experience is mainly
- with DOS, Unix, Amiga, CP/M, etc.
-
- My equipment:
- IBM PS/Valuepoint 486DX/33, with OS/2 v2.0.1 preinstalled
- PS/VP 6319 monitor, 15" flatscreen multisync
-
- I made a backup of the preinstalled system, and repartitioned my disk
- with:
- 60 Meg HPFS for OS/2
- 20 Meg FAT for DOS/Windows boot
- 120 Meg FAT for programs/data
-
- The OS/2 and DOS partitions are primary. I couldn't make OS/2 a logical
- partition because the preinstalled system only wants to be drive C:.
- But I figured this would work nice, and give me a path back to DOS.
-
- What I did:
- I decided to try playing with 1024x768 screen modes. I went thru the
- Welcome window and configuration setup to configure the 1024x768 mode for
- the desktop. Did a shutdown, and it worked ok.
-
- But the screen was flickering pretty bad. I thought this was kind of
- stupid, as this monitor was supposed to be able to do non-interlace.
-
- So I went back to 800x600 resolution. No flicker.
-
- So I start reading the FAQ. Don't find much in there about this, but the
- section on SVGA under DOS interests me.
-
- It says I can do this 'SVGA ON' command to setup DOS for SVGA. And then it
- mentions about setting refresh rates prior to that. So I pulled out the VGA
- utilities disk that came with the computer. It's a Tseng ET4000 chipset in
- there, and looking thru the manual it says to type 'VMODE 72M' to set it up
- for 72 Hz refreshed 1024x768 mode.
-
- I ran a DOS program that uses 1024x768 resolution(Atlas GIS), and by golly
- it did work! No flicker...
-
- So I did VMODE 72M, and VMODE 72H, SVGA ON, EXIT and Shutdown the system.
-
- Booted back up into OS/2, worked ok.
-
- Went thru the Welcome folder's system configuration and set it up for
- 1024x768 mode. Shutdown, rebooted and...
-
- Nothing, it's black. The disk light comes on when I do things like
- Ctrl-ESC, hit mouse buttons, etc. Just no display.
-
- I've tried renaming the file 'SVGADATA.PMI' which was created by SVGA ON to
- something else, but the machine locks up completely when I do that.
-
- So I have a couple of questions, if anyone can answer them:
-
- 1. How do I remedy this situation? If I have to, I will reinstall the
- OS/2 system, that's why I set it all up on a seperate partition.
-
- 2. How do I get OS/2 to use a 70 Hz non-interlaced 1024x768 on the
- desktop? It does 60 Hz by default and flickers badly.
-
- I'll summarize any responses.
-
- Thanks for any help.
