- I have a few words to say about Central Point Software's WinBackup--I wish
- they'd make a product that would work reasonably! If it wasn't such a
- nice program, I'd say I hate it; as it is, I can only lament it's weaknesses.
-
- A few months ago, I purchased two 486SX's with Colorado 120's for a client,
- and recommended WinBackup--I'd been using it just fine at work for a year
- or so, and liked the way it works... Well, for some reason, it seemed like
- they were doomed not to work--I tried everything in the WORLD! I worked
- for days, and then finally with my vendor, and to no avail... Finally, after
- trying for a couple days, we got in touch with Central Point. After MANY
- proposed solutions not working, we got a Faxback doc that said something
- about the fact that on some faster machines, there are problems with the
- bus speed (I'd tried all of them) and the fact that the software uses DMA.
- Among other solutions, it was recommended that 16 color drivers be avoided
- and 256 ones be used--I changed my Windows drivers to 256c, and BAM! it
- worked! Any guesses as to why?
-
- Sorry to go on about this, but I borrowed a friend's tape drive last nite
- (a Mountain) and tried to use WinBackup (I've done it before with a CMS
- drive from work), and it wouldn't work--I switched to 256c and there was
- no problem... I just had to rag a bit, because I'm so happy that the
- solution was such a self-evident, logical, right-under-my-nose one...
- NOT!
