- SB> Hi Timothy,
-
- SB> I'm relatively new to this conference and from all the useful advice I
- SB> see you leaving for others I thought you'd be the best person to
- SB> talk to about a few questions I have. If you can't help me I
- SB> appreciate it if you'd steer me in the right direction.
-
- SB> I access this conference via my local BBS here in Toronto Canada -
- SB> Canada Remote Systems (CRS). I notice that you often advise people
- SB> to download various files and OS2FAQ from "anonymous ftp".
-
- SB> First of all I'm wondering what "anonymous ftp" means.
-
- This is a method of picking up files from one of many large computer
- databases on the Internet.
-
- SB> Do I have access to this via my BBS and FIDONET? If so, how do I go
-
- No, you don't have access to this on CRS, basically because CRS is not
- _on_ the Internet. It is merely a gateway.
-
- It is physically possible for CRs to provide this service, but they
- don't. They're afraid of something like someone with little experience
- phoning the University of Hawaii's ftp site and downloading the whole
- thing, into CRS.
-
- SB> about accessing it? If not is there a list of BBSs so that I could
- SB> get access?
-
- To access it, you must get an account on a computer system which is
- actually on Internet, for example, the University of Toronto. If you're
- serious, phone them. It'll cost you, um, $75 per three months, I betcha.
- There are other places where you can get access. Ask locally.
-
- SB> Also, I don't know how familiar you are with posting messages via
- SB> INTERNET etc but I haven't had any luck with it. I'm supposed to
- SB> have access to INTERNET via my CRS BBS but the person I address
- SB> messages to never receives my forwards, nor I his. Is there somewhere
- SB> I could get some advice or instructions on how to do this - format,
- SB> protocol etc?
-
- What you're really asking about here is the CRS system, and that's a
- killer. I've tried four times to post private messages on both FIDO and
- Internet, and they've all showed up public. I've followed the instructions
- in the manual and they don't work, for starters, with a mail reader.
- Now, I suppose, you're going to tell me they don't work _without_ a mail
- reader, either.....
-
- The place to get all your advice and instruction is, of course, CRS.
- Either post these questions in Conference 9 (TECH CRSGEN), or phone the
- sysop on the tech line, or attend a Thursday night seminar
- (recommended!) or drop in and talk to the sysops on Saturday afternoon.
-
- And that brings us to this. This discussion is slightly off topic here,
- so let's move it to Conf 9 on CRS. See you there.
-
- SB> Thanks in advance for your help. I hope you receive this message as
- SB> I'm sending it addressed "PRIVATE".
-
- Yeah, "PRIVATE", yer*ss!!
