-
- I looked up the articles for you. Actually, the tips on speeding up
- printing are in January issue of PC WORLD page 124 and the article about
- "Fast print to port" not being fast is in January issue of PC COMPUTING
- page 234.
-
- Here's a summary of the "speed up tips".
-
- 1. Make sure you have SET TEMP=c:\<your temp directory> in your
- autoexec.bat. Don't use a RAM disk for your temp directory.
- Temp directory should have at least 6 Meg free.
-
- 2. In print manager options, you can set the priorities;
- low priority = printing is slow but you can get back to work sooner.
- med priority (win default) = divides printing and app chores
- high priority = Fastest printing, but foreground apps may slow a bit.
-
- 3. Make sure you have the LATEST print driver. HP has new print drivers
- for its LaserJet III family.
-
- 4. Make sure your virual memory setting is not less than what your
- printer has. To print a report showing your printer's virtual
- memory capability print the file TESTPS.TXT (in c:\windows\system)
- using DOS command: copy testps.txt lpt(n):
- Open control panel, printers ans select Setup,Options,Advanced and
- set the proper memory setting.
-
- 5. Use Print directly to Port option in control panel. (See article
- referenced above in PC COMPUTING.)
-
- 6. Print directly to network queue. If you're on a NetWare LAN,
- open Control Panel,Connect,Network and select the queue.
-
- 7. Use DOS's print spooler. Print your document to a file and use
- DOS print command.
-
- 8. Use PCL mode on your printer rather than Postscript for jobs that
- don't need postscript (ie fancy fonts or CorelDraw).
-
- 9. Use internal printer fonts rather than downloadable fonts.
- (ie. The TT font Arial prints 3 times faster than ATM Helvetica)
-
- Hope this helps. BTW, the article in PC World has many other tips for
- speeding up Windows and DOS.
