- I've recently encountered a strange Windows performance problem
- that has me stumped.
-
- Configuration:
- Clone 80486DX - 33 MHz
- 8MB Ram
- 6MB Perm. Swap file (32-bit disk access)
- Stock Windows 3.1 configuration (problem exists with fresh install)
- SMARTDRV 4.0 configured for 2MB XMS (prior to and during Windows)
-
- Problem:
- A simple CPU performance test - run in a full-screen (not windowed)
- DOS session from Windows 386 ehanced mode runs at about 1/3 normal
- speed.
-
- Normal performance can be restored by constraining SMARTDRV to a small
- cache size (say 256K) during Windows.
-
- Problem occurs when using QEMM 6.02 or HIMEM.SYS.
-
- Problem occurs if PC-TOOLS 7.1 PC-CACHE is substituted in place
- of SMARTDRV.
-
- Puzzles:
- On the surface it might appear that Windows was memory constrained but
- no other applications are competing for the 8MB real and 6MB virutal
- memory. Windows Help-About shows large free memory and resources.
-
- The CPU test in the DOS session does no disk I/O - it is just a
- CPU test.
-
- Remember - this is stock 3.1 - no customizations of SYSTEM.INI.
-
- Similarly configured machines (better brands) do not exhibit this
- dramatic slow-down).
-
-
- Any ideas or suggestions where to look?
-
-
- Many thanks
