  11. Thanks to everyone who replied to my mouse question.  The consensus is
  12. that the ball does go into the hole till it's approximately even with
  13. the surface, so that is not the problem.

  15. After looking more closely inside, I now suspect that the small plastic
  16. roller in the corner inside might be bad, and not have enough spring
  17. tension to keep the ball in place, which might cause the ball to wobble
  18. between the rollers, periodically losing contact with one of them.  That
  19. agrees with the symptom, which is for the cursor to skip across the sreen
  20. erratically instead of following the mouse movement smoothly.
