- Thanks to everyone who replied to my mouse question. The consensus is
- that the ball does go into the hole till it's approximately even with
- the surface, so that is not the problem.

- After looking more closely inside, I now suspect that the small plastic
- roller in the corner inside might be bad, and not have enough spring
- tension to keep the ball in place, which might cause the ball to wobble
- between the rollers, periodically losing contact with one of them. That
- agrees with the symptom, which is for the cursor to skip across the sreen
- erratically instead of following the mouse movement smoothly.
