- Recently I asked whether Win 3.1 has a bug limiting it to using 12MB
- of RAM memory. I received one private response firmly denying that
- such a bug exists. I then did the following test (which I should have
- thought of doing before posting my question).
-
- Set up swap file of zero megabytes, turn off SmartDrive, turn off
- IdleWild, start up Windows, and measure how much free memory is
- available using help, about program manager. I get 14453KB, which is
- reasonable for my 16MB machine. I assume the difference is taken up by
- Windows on top of DOS, by Program Manager, and by some device drivers
- and TSRs I didn't bother to eliminate.
-
- Conclusion: This was a false alarm. Win 3.1 isn't limited to 12MB of
- RAM, at least on my hardware or that of the person responding to my
- question.
