- : When you edit a file with Notepad, Write, or Works for Windows you get
- : carriage returns at the end of a paragraph. In Notepad you can turn on Word
- : Wrap to see lines stop at the right edge of the window. In the other
- : programs word wrap is automatic. Unfortunately, when you "Save As... Text"
- : all that nice formatting is lost. The file is written with carriage returns
- : at the end of paragraphs, not at the end of each line.
-
- : One solution I've found is WordPerfect 4.2, which puts a "soft return" at
- : the end of each line. When you save the file as ASCII it translates those
- : soft returns into real carriage returns. I don't know if the newer versions
- : of WordPerfect will do that and I don't think it makes sense to buy
- : WordPerfect just to get carriage returns at the end of each line. Not every
- : already has the program.
-
- Another package is Word For Windows. It has the option to save a file as
- ASCII text with line breaks, which does place carriage returns at the end
- of each line. One other point to consider when going to ASCII text from
- some of these programs is that you are often going from proportional fonts
- to monospaced ones. This usually causes some lines to be longer than expected,
- because the narrow characters (like i,1,l) to take up more space after changing
- to monospace characters. To make sure you still get what you see, you might
- want to set the font to 12 point courier, which is how most printers will
- view the ASCII text.
