- Hi there,
-
- The company I consult for purchased a Gateway 486 machine with the
- Gateway Telebit (?) fax/modem board. The modem works great in DOS,
- works great in DOS sessions from Windows, and works great in Windows
- enhanced mode.
-
- However, in Windows standard mode, their preferred mode, the modem
- totally locks up the machine when sending info back. You can send a
- fax, and you can type commands to the modem when using a Windows
- terminal emulator. But if you give the modem an ATZ command, it locks
- the system immediately, or if the modem connects to the other end
- after you initiate a dial, it locks the system up.
-
- I've talked to Gateway about this, and we can't figure anything out.
- The Windows port settings are all right, and the modem functions
- properly in DOS. There is a network ethernet card installed, and I
- noticed when configuring the system that, apparently, the modem may
- overwrite its I/O buffer space. Originally, the network buffer was
- positioned immediately following the modem port's buffer, and any
- communications from the modem locked the machine up, in DOS as well.
- I moved the network buffer up in memory on a whim, and the problem
- disappeared immediately, except in Windows standard mode.
-
- So, any ideas? Does this buffer overwrite sound reasonable? That
- would be a modem firmware problem, and the Gateway techs say they
- haven't heard of this problem before... it's got me pretty baffled. I
- can return the modem the next time I'm there in a couple weeks, but I
- want to see what else I can find out first. Thanks for any help any
- of you may have.
