- I have been using linux on a 486dx (TVGA8900 and a dubious make svga mon)
- for over two months now but
- I still haven't solve the problem of setting in Xconfig. I have tried the
- spread sheet, data given in monitor and vid-card manuals,
- IBM recommanded timings included in the distribution and
- anythings else you could possibly name.
-
- I always get a ceased up screen with remains of ms-windows scattered about.
- The keyboard doesn't respond either.
-
- I have come to two possible conclusions:
- 1 I'm not getting the Xconfig details correct.
- 2 There is something wrong with the distribution I'f ftp'd. The reason for
- saying that is because it took me a few attempts to get a working
- version of the a b and c series therefore I'm not surprised that my x series
- is faulty. I ftp my linux either form doc.src.ic.ac.uk (Imperial College
- London) or ftp.mcc.ac.uk (Manchester Computing Centre). My experience is that
- there are incidieces of more that 1.44Mb of stuff in the distribution
- distribution directries which were supposed to fit onto one disk.
- I have tried ftping form MIT but it takes viturally forever for any
- substantial amount of data to get through. We are talking over
- 30Mb here.
-
- Is there any suggestion from anybody? I'd like to try fixing the Xconfig
- first.
