- I realize that the human-readable version of the FAQ is still available,
- and this isn't a flame at Pepe. His post is just the little nudge that
- has pushed me over the edge.
-
- Could we please refrain from encrypting (with LaTeX, or whatever) documents
- that don't need to be pretty? Things like the FAQ, or software installation
- instructions, are most useful if all you need to do to read them is look
- at them. Significant infrastructure is required to deal with LaTeX, and
- not all of us are interested in making that investment.
-
- Lilo is a wonderful piece of software, but I'm probably not using it to
- full advantage because I cannot read the documentation. I may install
- LaTeX someday just because of Lilo. It will not be soon, however, because
- the few hours a week I can spend playing with Linux are quite precious
- and I do not throw them away lightly.
-
- The GNU people are really bad about distributing most of their documentation
- in texinfo format and then saying "Well, just use emacs!". Fortunately,
- they also provide the texi2roff program to decrypt the texinfo stuff into
- a more widely useable format. Is there a similar decrypter for LaTeX that
- doesn't require a full-up LaTeX installation?
-
- Sorry for being such a grouch, and thanks for listening.
