- I've just spent several days trying to get my monitor working
- with X in 1024x768i mode on an ET4000. It's not a happy story.
- I found the spreadsheets to be very misleading (as is some of the
- documentation).
-
- The values calculated by the spreadsheets for the timings were well
- out when the specification and actual as measured on the card
- output were compared.
-
- The method I used, which is really awful, but at least has partially
- worked, was this. Find some working software (probably MS-windows)
- whcih puts your card and screen into the appropriate mode. Stick
- an oscilloscope into the video out socket and measure
- the timing.
-
- Put these values into a modegen spreadsheet of your choice and use the
- calculated values in yur X setup. Use the scope again to measure the
- difference. Tweak the values in the spreadsheet. Iterate ... MANY TIMES!
-
- It's a horrible method. I can't believe that the spreadsheets are
- generally as wrong as I've found them to be (factors of 4 and more
- between specified and actual output). Therefore I must conclude that
- there is some strange interaction going on between the various bits
- and pieces of hardware and sofwtrae I have here.
-
- BTW - thanks to all the people who have put in some much work with
- Linux, X, and the SLS kit. Apart from X it's a joy to install.
-
- Keep at it... and good luck..
-
- cheers... gary
