- When I compiled the TIFF libraries from the XV package, gcc used 20 M of virtual
- memory to compile the group III fax compression code. This is because gcc has a
- misfeature (not quite a bug) (in the compiler) that makes it use incredible
- quantities of memory when it has large statically (i.e. initialized at
- compile-time) arraysa, as is the case with Fax G III (in fact, these are so
- large, they're machine-generated...)
