- What I was getting at is that for me (and I suspect many others, like the
- original contributor), linux-networking.faq is not simple enough. Before I
- started playing with Linux in late November, my experience with computers was
- limited to DOS/Windows 3.1 on a standalone machine. My only contact with
- networks was through an IBM 3084Q account in Cambridge, which I only ever used
- for mail, and the University's PC/Mac network. In both cases I know zilch
- about the way networks work. I know TCP/IP is a protocol employed by most of
- the worlds biggest networks, but I know absolutely no details, and can't find
- any way of learning the basics. In a few months I'm going to want to connect
- my machine to the UK.AC.CAM domain, and I'd like to know what I'm doing before
- I bugger the entire local network! :-)
-
- So could we have either a) some pointers to a newbie's guide to TCP/IP or b)
- some really simpleton instructions we can follow to get a working loopback
- system, with which we can then tinker and learn that way.
