- A question for all you long time *nix users:

- A typical system seems to consist of a number of like-named directories, such
- as /bin, /usr/bin, /usr/local/bin, and so on. What rules of thumb have been
- evolved (if any) to guide where new items should be placed? I am interested
- in the rationale of the nomenclature more than a concrete "programs starting
- with the letter F go into directory so-and-so" type of answer.
