- I have installed Linux from the SLS release on my home 486 and run into
- a couple of problems/wierdnesses.
-
- 1) My SVGA card uses the Trident 8900C which X386 claims to support.
- In fact, X386 recognizes the chip, returns the correct amount of
- memory on the board, and gets most of the clocks correctly. But,
- whenever I start up X386, it locks the machine and even CNTL-ALT-BACKSPACE
- won't kill the server. I have to reboot. Running the mono version
- of X386 produces a wierd pattern on the screen which I am able to
- change in size by changing the default video mode. The color version
- simply blacks the screen before locking the machine. Hints, clues,
- or fixes would be appreciated.
-
- 2) Besides the root, I added one other user to the system. If I list
- the users files as root, it displays the correct ownership. However,
- if log in as the user, a whoami claims that UID 405 is not found, and
- the file ownership is shown as 405 not as user reed. (The entry in
- /etc/passwd is correct, but somehow only accessed by the root.)
-
-
- Other than these two problems, I have to say I am quite impressed by
- Linux and very appreciative of all the work that people have put
- into it.
