- - My panic has subsided, I finally figured out what the /etc/wtmp file is.
- Now I have a question for those folks that are using serial terminals
- and getty, does anyone know why if I have a serial terminal configured,
- but don't connect it, that I'd get continuous login entries into the
- wtmp file? Overnight, the file grew to 7 megabytes in size, and the
- system was doing nothing. If I connect a terminal, the file stops
- growing. Is there some handshake parameters I need to set to keep
- the terminal handler from getting confused? I've commented the serial
- terminal out for the time being, but it was handy to have in case X-Windows
- went south, I still had access.
-
- - Another problem, not related. I rebuilt the kernel, and found out that
- top, free, etc. stopped working. I've been told that's because they reach
- into kernel memory for their information, and when I rebuild, the locations
- change. That being the case, where do I get the source for those so I
- can make them match the kernel? I'm a bit surprised they aren't on the
- SLS distribution, since it seems you can't rebuild without them. Am I
- missing something really basic? Keep in mind that I'm new to Linux/Unix,
- so I can do really stupid things at times. :-) I extracted the SLS
- distribution kernel image from the a2 disk and am using that until I can
- figure out how to get the utility sources and get them working again with
- my customized version.
-
- - I have X-Windows running with olwm (actually olvwm), all is well except
- that it seems scroll bars have a serious bug. When I turn on scroll bars
- for an xterm and use them more than once or twice, the keyboard becomes
- unresponsive (dead), and the mouse keeps the up/down cursor shape for
- the scroll bar and is otherwise useless. I can move that cursor all over
- the screen, but I can't do anything with it. Is this a known problem, or
- is it something peculiar to my setup?
-
- - Finally, a minor question. How does one go about modifying the
- configuration for the build to turn off the NumLock key by default?
- I'd like to do that next time I build the kernel.
-
- - I was kinda' surprised that there's no manual page for fsck, is there
- any documentation for it with Linux? It seems that the Unix books I
- have document different command line switches, so it would be nice
- to find a document that describes this particular implementation.
-
- From the looks of this, you'd think I was having major problems, but
- overall, I'm very impressed with how easily Linux comes up, probably
- because the SLS package includes everything to get you going.
