  17. So are all the other programs that are on the CohWare disks.  You can
  18. get many of them free if you call mwcbbs.

  20. The difference is that they are precompiled and debugged (well, debugged
  21. is relative).  And shipped to you on disk with installation software.

  23. So the answer is this:  they are free unless you get them from MWC.  If
  24. you get them from MWC, you are paying for distribution, porting, debugging,
  25. etc.  I bought them because I don't have time to fiddle with them, but
  26. if I had the time, I would use what I got off the net.

  28. Also, for people not on the net and too far to call Northbrook, IL, it
  29. works out to be cost equivalent to ordering them.  A call from England,
  30. say, to Northbrook IL to download 1 meg of binaries for GCC would be
  31. $40 easy and that's at 9600bps on a clean line (takes approx. 40-50 
  32. minutes).  At 2400bps it would be even more.  You can get it shipped
  33. to you ready to go for the same price.

  35. So, paying for them is pretty much an option.  You can find most
  36. of them elsewhere.  It's just a service MWC provides at a reasonable
  37. (IMHO) charge.  Most *nix manufacturers provide no such option, and
  38. you have to port/compile/debug on your own.  I think it's a good idea
  39. for people like me.
