- Oh lord, what a horrid possibilty--the electronic equivalent
- of urine testing! Though I don't use illegal drugs myself
- I consider the habits of others *none of my business* except
- insofar as their *actions* might affect me. If any agency
- tried to make me grep my users' files for drug-related words
- I hope I'd have the courage to refuse!

- I have a friend who is a librarian; a few years ago the FBI
- tried to get them to report who checked out "sensitive" books.
- Fortunately for her, she worked in a state with a very strict
- law concerning confidentiality of circulation records, so she
- could simply say "I cannot do that without violating state law"
- and they dropped the matter. I understand some friends of hers
- in other states had to stand up to some pressure before negative
- media publicity made the FBI quit asking libraries to do that.
-
- However, I wonder if computer sysadms would be able to stand
- up to heavy Federal pressure as easily, given the lack of good
- precedents in this area?
-
- PS: Now that I have posted this message those keywords will
- turn up in connection with *my* name! I hope this doesn't
- trigger a dossier on me! If you think I'm being paranoid, read
- Bamford's {The Puzzle Palace} about some of the things NSA has
- done in the past with keyword searching and "watch lists" of
- trigger words! Just for completeness I'll add a few more
- keywords: CIA DIA MI5 MI6 NRO KEYHOLE GCHQ KGB (do they still
- operate?).
