- current state of use of the OO technology in the industry
- and commercial communities. Who are the users? Current
- applications,interfaces to legacy systems,current pratices.
- Benefits, problems, lessons learnt. Market forecasts.

-
- 11:00 "OBJECT-ORIENTED TECHNOLOGY: basic concept ............... Martin Fowler
-
-
- Objectives: at the end of this presentation the attendee
- will know what is meant by Object-Oriented technology, what
- are the basic concepts, how this technology covers the
- entire application development paradigm from business
- modelling to analysis, design and programming.

-
- 14:00 Digital's Strategy in Object Oriented Technology ........... Sami Zahran
- Hans Rene Klaye
- Pierre Tornier
- Content: This session presents Digital's strategy with
- respect to Object-Oriented Technology. This strategy fits
- into the more general context of Software Engineering and
- begins at the business needs level down to implementation
- tools and methods. This is a comprehensive strategy which
- includes services, trainings and tools.
-
-
- 15:15 break
-
- 15:45 Real case example of an OO application at a customer site .. Serge Imbaud
-
- Objective: to present a project that Digital has done for a
- large bank, using the C++ language. The goal is to describe
- why Object-Oriented Technology was chosen, what was the
- approach taken, what were the problems encountered and how
- they were resolved. A demonstration of the final package
- will be shown.
-
-
- 16:30 ------ split in two parallel streams: Management & Technical -------
-
-
- ************************* MANAGEMENT STREAM ****************************
-
-
- 16:30 Business Issues Workshop .................................... Sami Zahran
- Mike Cook
- Content: this is a shortened version of a service that
- Digital offers, which provides a clear understanding of the
- benefits and risks of applying Object-Oriented technology
- to support your business requirements. This participative
- workshop gives you the ability to decide to investigate
- further or not in Object-Oriented technology.
-
-
- 18:00 ================ END OF THE FIRST DAY ===============================
-
- 20:00 ========================= DINNER ===================================
-
- 9:00 ======================== SECOND DAY ==================================
-
- 9:00 Presentation of the Worshop results ....................... Sami Zahran/
- Mike Cook
-
- 9:15 Legacy Applications ....................................... Brent Fry
-
- Content: to show how legacy applications can be used in
- the new Object-Oriented environment without loosing their
- functionalities, and being able to interoperate with other
- applications.A demonstration using ACAs technology will be
- shown.
-
- 10:30 Break
-
- 11:00 Application Migration ..................................... Les Hellenack
-
- Content: To give guidelines on how to plan for migrating
- into Object-Oriented technology. This maybe the opportunity
- to clean the mess (code management, documentation, etc).
- Good Software Engineering & Object-Oriented technology are
- the main contributors to a successful work. Examples and
- pitfalls of migration will be given. This presentation is
- based on real experiences at customers sites.
-
-
- 12:30 LUNCH
-
- 2:00 Business Modelling ........................................ James SOPER
-
- Objectives: to explain what is business modelling and what
- are the benefits. A real "Workflow model" is demonstrated
- based on a Digital generic tool (GORBY).
-
-
- 2:45 Object Management and Reusability ......................... Hans Rene Kldy
-
- Content: to explain how object reusability (thru classes)
- can be achieved. To describe the status of standards with
- respect to the OO technology. To address the problem of
- managing large object libraries in a distributed software
- development environment.
-
- 3:45 Coffee break
-
- 4:15 Ultimate goal: Distributable Applications ................. Daniel Serain
-
- Content: This presentation emphasizes that the ultimate
- goal of the developper is good application design, which
- means nowdays distributability and portability. This is the
- best way to take advantage of a multi-vendor environment
- and to perform rightsizing. OO technology can significantly
- contribute to reach that goal but it is not the only answer.
-
-
- 5:00 OBJECTworks: an office tool ............................... Luc Vogeleer
-
- Objectives: To show how efficient and easy to use an OO tool
- can be in the office world. This tool emulates the user's
- real desk by providing assistance to many functions. It runs
- on PCs, under Microsoft Windows, Presentation Manager and
- Motif. This session is mainly a demonstration of the tool.
-
- 5:45 ================== END OF THE SECOND DAY =======================
-
- *************************** TECHNICAL STREAM *************************
- First day
-
- 16:30 Technology Issues Workshop ................................ Pierre Tornier
- Erman Sielker
-
- Content: This is a shortened version of a set of services
- which deal with such things as a feasibility assessment
- (organisation readiness, technology availibility), envi-
- ronment design, planning and managment.
- This participative workshop is aimed at showing you the
- issues associated to the introduction of OO technology
- into an existing development/production environment.
-
- 18:00 =================== END OF THE FIRST DAY =======================
-
- 20:00 ========================== DINNER ==============================
-
- 9:00 ======================== SECOND DAY ===========================
-
- 9:00 Results of the technology Workshop ........................ Pierre Tornier
- Erman Sielker
-
-
- 9:15 Objet Specification with Pictures: OBLOG .................. Pr. Sernadas
-
- Objective: to describe the OBLOG (Object-Oriented Analysis and
- Design) Method and stress its strengths and advantages. Prof.
- Sernadas is the "father" of this method which has been deve-
- loped at a university of Lisbon. A demonstration of the
- OBLOG Workbench will be performed.
-
- 10:30 Coffee break
-
- 11:00 A Comparison of Object-Oriented Analysis and Design Methods
- ........................................................... Martin Fowler
-
- Content: The main OO analysis and design methods are compared
- from three viewpoints: data, behavioural and architectural.
- This is a magistral work done by an expert in the field of
- OO, which will give you a very good understanding on the
- positioning of the various OO A/D methods.
-
- 12:30 lunch
-
- 2:00 Set of tools to support the entire Development Life Cycle
- ........................................................... Nick Hills
-
- Content: The purpose is to show that Digital has the A/D tool
- (DECdesign) which supports OO methods (Coad/Yourdon & Ptech)
- and that the generated C++ code can be handled by a set of
- programming tools (DEC FUSE) that exists today. This session
- will focuse on demonstrating those tools.
-
- 2:45 Rapid Prototyping .......................................... James SOPER
-
- Objectives: To show that Object-Oriented technology provides
- powerful means to perform rapid prototyping. A demonstration
- using a tool (GORBY) will show how fast one can develop a
- prototype.
-
- 3:30 Coffee break
-
- 4:00 How to deal with legacy database ........................... Manfred
- Schlueter
- Content: In Germany Digital has done several projects which
- had to deal with moving data from an existing database into
- a newly structured database. Object-Oriented technology has
- been used to build a meta-data model in order to allow an
- easy data transfer. A demonstration of the tool used will
- convince you how powerful this approach is.
-
-
- 4:45 Object-Oriented Database and Repository .................... Andrew
- Buchanan
- Objective: Object-Oriented databases are a reality today.This
- presentation emphasizes the importance of this technology,
- explain the problems that it help solving, and show where it
- does apply. A good example is the Digital repository tool,
- which will be described. A Multi-media demonstration will
- show the capabilities of this technology.
