- I aplaud the efforts to make a FAQ. However, I think writing a FAQ to
- satisfy this crowd is going to be really hard! Given that things like
- the defiition of an Object is still the subject of hot debate I
- suggest that we avoid anything but a cursory high-level description.
- In lieu of detailed defs we should provide references to key documents
- which discuss the topic. Or, even better, with the proper
- permissions, summaries or excerpts of those documents.
-
- Everyone here has their own bias and background and perhaps rightly
- objects (sorry about that pun) to definitions/descriptions which do
- not fit with theirs. By using published (presumably refereed and
- reviewed) definitions we can be assured that at least at some point in
- time, some reasonable faction of the OOP community felt them to be
- acceptable.
-
- Also, since FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions perhaps we
- should reconsider what goes into the FAQ. I have not noticed many
- people asking what an Object is. If they did, I expect they would get
- a few opinions and some references to some papers. Since the idea of
- a FAQ (as I understand it) is essentially to reduce message traffic, I
- suggest we provide the references and avoid the opinions.
-
- Clear cut facts like a list of some typical Smalltalk vendors are
- great. Even some opinions here are no problem as long as they are
- clearly opinions and several different view points are presented.
-
- Anyway, just my two instVars worth. Bob has way more guts than I do
- for attempting to do this. You may not agree with what he wrote but
- you can't dispute that it got the discussion going.
