- "FORGING THE LINK: Market-Technology-Policy"
-
- April 13-16, 1993

- SPONSORED BY: International Council for Computer Communication
-
- HOSTED BY: Unitel

- Hewlett-Packard
- Communications Canada
-
-
- The Executive Committee of Multimedia Communications 1993 extends
- a warm invitation to you to participate in one of the topical
- conferences sponsored by the International Council for Computer
- Communication. At the most recent of its main biennial con-
- ferences, ICCC '92, held in Genoa, Italy in October 1992, the
- ICCC celebrated 20 years of working to promote the development of
- computer communications. One of the ICCC's major activities is
- sponsoring conferences, including both regional and topical con-
- ferences. The 100 Governors of the ICCC live and work in most
- regions of the world. Its conferences provide a venue for dis-
- cussion of global activities in the application of computer com-
- munications as well as the emerging technical and policy develop-
- ments.
-
- The ICCC believes that multimedia communications is now an impor-
- tant topic for discussion by an international audience. Multi-
- media is still often used in stand alone mode but some com-
- municating applications are emerging. Technology is continuing
- to develop and the user interface is improving, allowing more
- complex applications. There are still many issues of policy and
- regulation that need resolution to unleash the full power of this
- technology. At Banff next April you will be treated to a review
- of the state-of-the-art in multimedia communications and a vision
- for where the future leads. Demonstrations as well as plenary
- sessions and parallel theme track sessions will provide a rounded
- view. Tutorials will review the background to the issues.
-
- The conference venue is the Banff Springs Hotel, built in the
- 19th century but fully up-to-date with a new conference centre
- adjacent to the hotel. Banff itself is a beautiful setting at
- any time of the year. Nestled in Canada's Rocky Mountains, Banff
- draws visitors from many parts of the world to ski, golf, hike,
- take pictures, or to participate in cultural events. The Banff
- Centre for the Arts is well known as a cultural and educational
- Centre and especially for its work at the interface between cul-
- ture and technology. A special evening event at the Banff Centre
- will give conference participants a view of the Centre's work.
-
- The conference will provide an opportunity to share your
- understanding and knowledge and to learn from others in this
- spectacular and luxurious setting. The Executive Committee of
- Multimedia Communications '93 invites you to join with us to
- explore the present and the future with multimedia communica-
- tions.
-
- Dorothy Phillips, Chair, Executive Committee
-
-
- THEME OF THE CONFERENCE
-
- The conference theme is "Forging the Links - Market, Technology,
- Policy." We believe that it is time for professionals from all
- areas of multimedia technology to discuss their insight and
- vision with each other. The conference will provide parallel ses-
- sions to discuss each of the three theme tracks in depth.
-
- The technology for multimedia communications is already being
- applied. The markets and applications theme track will review
- applications in business, education, health care and entertain-
- ment, and the market for these services. It will discuss effects
- of this new way of communicating on social and personal life.
-
- The platforms and architectures for multimedia communication con-
- tinue to develop. Higher bandwidth communication lines, faster
- switches and better user interfaces are just over the horizon.
- This theme track will explore some of the most recent develop-
- ments from labs in several countries.
-
- Policies in many areas need discussion and standardization in
- order to allow communication between people globally. The policy
- theme track will explore international perspectives on copyright,
- standards, publishing, broadcasting, and methods of stimulating
- applications by government and industry leadership.
-
- As well as theme track sessions, plenary sessions will address
- these topics together, discussing how to forge the links between
- them. Demonstrations will provide a view of some of the latest
- technology, both in stand alone and communicating multimedia.
- Tutorials offered on the first day will provide an update on the
- current status in each of the three theme areas with an overview
- in the morning and a more specific topic in the afternoon.
-
- Multimedia communications is arriving at our desktops and will
- soon be on the doorsteps of our homes. Multimedia Communications
- '93 will provide both a broad perspective and in-depth discussion
- of the many facets of this new communications mode.
-
- The detailed conference program will be available in late Decem-
- ber from the conference secretariat.
