- Well, I'm sure this is a question that will receive a great deal
- of attention on this list, if it hasn't already. Somebody has to
- ask it, so I suppose I will...
-
- I just very recently heard about the new Borland Turbo Pascal 7.0
- and Turbo Pascal 7.0. Well, I now use and love Turbo Pascal 6.0,
- but there are definitely some things lacking. Not so many
- programming features as development features -- token colorization,
- and real online help for TurboVision, something which is extremely
- powerful if you can figure it out.
-
- So, the big question is this. Is it worth it to upgrade? Will I get
- all the great new things I'm looking for, everything I've ever
- wanted in a Pascal compiler and more? From the general opinions
- I've heard recently, I think the answer is no. They say that the
- new version is no faster than the old, and there are enough "little
- idiosyncracies" to make it not worth it. In any case, I would have
- to keep two copies of Turbo on my system, because I hear the new
- TPU format is again not backwards compatible. (Hey, Borland: You
- ever think of making new and more efficient TPU formats, but
- including an auto-detect for older units and coping with them? I
- can't tell you how many third-party, registered and unregistered,
- units I cherish for which I do not have and could not get source!)
-
- So, I pose to you the big question. Comparing the benefits to the
- COST (which I hear is pretty outrageous if you want something
- decent), is it worth it for me to upgrade? Seeing that a lot of
- people here use BP7 and TP7 makes me think that this is the best
- place to ask. Thanks a lot!
